The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027 were released on September 30, 2026, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, emerging as the highest-ranked Indian institution at 254th globally. No Indian university has secured a place in the global top 250 this year.

The 2027 edition ranks 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, making it the most extensive edition of the THE World University Rankings so far. India has 143 institutions in the rankings, 15 more than the previous year.

IISc rank in THE World University Rankings 2027

IISc has secured the 254th position globally and is the highest-ranked Indian institution in the latest rankings. IISc was placed in the 201–250 band in the previous two editions.

Top Indian universities in THE World University Rankings 2027

After IISc, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences is India's second-highest-ranked institution, placed in the 326–350 band. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences follows in the 451–500 band. Jamia Millia Islamia and KIIT University are both placed in the 501–550 band.

IITs in THE World University Rankings 2027

Among the Indian Institutes of Technology, IIT Indore is placed in the 651–700 band. IIT Patna is in the 701–800 band, while IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Mandi are in the 801–1000 band. IIT Ropar is placed in the 1001–1200 band.

While no Indian institution made the global top 250, India's overall representation has increased.

The country has 143 institutions in the 2027 rankings, compared with 128 last year. The United States has the highest number of ranked institutions, with 168, followed by India with 143, Turkey with 124 and Japan with 112.

THE evaluates universities using 17 performance indicators covering five broad areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry.

Oxford retains No. 1 position globally

At the global level, the University of Oxford has retained the No. 1 position for the 11th consecutive year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is ranked second, with only a 0.1-point difference between the two institutions.

China's Tsinghua University has climbed to 11th place, becoming the highest-ranked Asian university. The National University of Singapore is ranked 15th, giving Asia three universities in the global top 15 for the first time.
