Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made a surprise visit to Delhi University’s North Campus late Wednesday evening to ensure the safety of women students, adequate lighting, CCTV coverage, and civic amenities.
The Chief Minister reached out to the students outside the Arts Faculty and directly interacted with them over tea in an informal setting. She asked them about their safety while travelling at night, transportation, hostels and academics.

“If you face any problem, tell me,” she told students, assuring them the government would take prompt action on their genuine concerns.
The students shared concerns about dark road stretches, footpaths, inadequate PG facilities and other related issues.
During a walk through the campus, Gupta identified several dark spots and sought on-the-spot reports from officials. She noted that despite adequate lighting on main roads, several interior stretches used frequently by women students remained dark. She directed officials to identify all such locations and ensure adequate lighting, pruning of tree branches that obstruct illumination and the installation of additional lights wherever required.
Gupta expressed her displeasure over broken and uneven footpaths at several places, directing officials to ensure students’ movement was not hindered.
She specifically stressed the convenience for students with disabilities and ordered immediate inspection and repair of infrastructure accordingly.
Taking stock of CCTV arrangements, she inquired about the number of cameras installed, how many were functional and where more were needed.
She made it clear that no sensitive area on the campus should remain outside the surveillance network and directed that new cameras be installed at the earliest and existing ones checked.
The Chief Minister also enquired about PCR van presence and deployment of women police personnel at night.
She stressed close coordination between police and university administration to further strengthen security.
After noticing garbage and poorly maintained green belts, she directed officials to ensure immediate cleaning, saying thousands of students move through the campus daily and cleanliness, safe pathways and better public facilities are essential.
PG and hostel facilities were also discussed at length. When students raised concerns about PG conditions, CM Gupta said the Delhi government will soon bring a PG policy to lay down necessary rules and standards. She added that the government is also working on constructing new hostels and providing better hostel facilities for safer accommodation.
She directed officials to re-inspect Arts Faculty, Law Faculty, Science Faculty, parking areas and other sensitive parts and fix gaps in lighting without delay.
There can be no compromise on safety of women students, she said, adding that action taken on her directions will be reviewed subsequently.
The CM also spoke to students about self-defence training and encouraged them to make time for it.
Senior officials from PWD, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi Police accompanied the Chief Minister during the visit, which ended with tea and conversation with students.
