India to soon get first US public university campus in Hyderabad, receives UGC nod

The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) has received a UGC letter of intent to establish a campus in Hyderabad. The move would make it the first American public university to set up a campus in India and the first foreign university in Telangana.

The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) is set to become the first American public university to establish a degree-granting campus in India, after receiving a letter of intent from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to set up its campus in Hyderabad.

The proposed campus will also be the first foreign university campus in Telangana. It is expected to offer programmes in high-demand fields such as business, computing, engineering and analytics, with a focus on interdisciplinary education, applied learning and career readiness.

FIRST STUDENTS EXPECTED TO BEGIN CLASSES IN AUGUST 2027

CU Denver will continue to complete the required regulatory processes and consult academic and industry stakeholders as it develops the Hyderabad campus. The first batch of students is expected to begin classes in August 2027.

Additional programmes will be proposed to the UGC for approval from the second year onwards.

The campus is also expected to align with the priorities of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, including multidisciplinary education, internationalisation and a greater focus on learner outcomes and employability.

CU Denver Chancellor Kenneth T Christensen said the Hyderabad campus builds on the university’s longstanding association with students from India.

“Expanding access to high-quality education has long been central to CU Denver’s vision and goals. Our plans in Hyderabad build on that commitment, as well as our longstanding connection with students from India who have been part of the CU Denver community for decades,” he said.

“We now have an opportunity to extend that connection and bring our unique experience to students in India, combining rigorous academics, career-aligned learning, and real-world experience that prepare students for meaningful careers and contributions to their communities,” Christensen added.

PROGRAMMES AND INDIA PARTNERSHIP

The university said the Hyderabad campus will combine rigorous academics with applied learning and real-world experience, while maintaining academic links with its Denver campus.

Global education company Emeritus will serve as CU Denver’s strategic joint venture partner in India. It will support the university in establishing and expanding the campus, particularly in non-academic functions.

Ashwin Damera, Co-founder and CEO of Emeritus, said the proposed campus would bring globally relevant education closer to Indian students.

“CU Denver’s focus on applied learning, interdisciplinary education, and career readiness is particularly relevant to the aspirations of today’s students and the needs of a rapidly evolving workforce,” Ashwin Damera added.

The move comes as India continues to expand international collaborations in higher education, with foreign universities increasingly exploring opportunities to establish campuses in the country.
