Pune: Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education will frame the curriculum and prepare textbooks for Std IX to XII, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The state boardâs executive committee recently approved the move. The board will frame the curriculum for Std IX and XI for the academic year 2027-28. It will do the same for Std X and XII for the 2028-29 academic year.
Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has been responsible for the curriculum development for these classes in recent years, while Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research (Balbharati) prepared the corresponding textbooks. Under the new arrangement, the state board will frame the curriculum and prepare the textbooks. The printing of the textbooks will be entrusted to Balbharati.
State board chairperson Trigun Kulkarni said, âThe board has started the work of preparing a new curriculum through subject experts for Std IX to XII in accordance with NEP 2020. The move comes against the backdrop of phased implementation of the NEP-based school curriculum in Maharashtra.
The new curriculum has been introduced for Std I in 2025-26 and for Std II, III, IV and VI in 2026-27. Std VII, IX and XI are scheduled to adopt the revised curriculum in 2027-28, followed by Std VIII, X and XII in 2028-29.â
The responsibility for curriculum and textbook development was changed in 2016 during the tenure of then school education principal secretary Nandkumar. A govt ordinance assigned the curriculum development to SCERT and the textbook preparation to Balbharati.
The latest decision invokes the provisions of the state boardâs governing legislation to restore the responsibility for Std IX to XII to the board. âStudy boards and subject-specific panels are being constituted for the exercise. Retired officials and teachers are expected to be deputed to assist in the process,â said Kulkarni.
Education experts said the change could provide greater coordination between curriculum design, board examinations and assessment patterns, provided the process involved adequate consultation with teachers and subject experts. Former headmaster Mahendra Ganpule said, âThe state boardâs curriculum should be developed on the lines of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). From that perspective, the decision to entrust the preparation of the curriculum and textbooks for Std IX to XII to the state board is a welcome step.â
