IITs bar Oracle, 21 other companies from campus hiring over withdrawn job offers

The IITs have decided to stop cooperating with 22 companies, including Oracle, for the next two placement seasons after more than 150 job offers made to 2026 graduates went unhonoured. The move follows a rise in offer withdrawals and comes as technology hiring remains cautious.

The IITs are taking action against companies that made job offers to graduating students and later failed to honour them. As many as 22 companies are set to face two years of non-cooperation from the institutes after more than 150 offers made across 23 IITs went unhonoured.

The AIPC, the central body coordinating placement and internship guidelines across IITs, decided on the action at a meeting held at IIT-Guwahati earlier this month, as per an Economic Times report.

The committee plans to inform the companies about the decision by September 30. Rather than calling it a "blacklisting", the IITs will describe the action as "non-cooperation".

The companies will therefore not be considered for recruitment through IIT campus placements for the next two placement seasons.

According to ET, the offers involved number more than 150 across 23 IITs. Some companies had withdrawn 10 to 15 offers each.

The final list is still being collated as individual IITs report the latest status of cases to the AIPC.

ORACLE AMONG COMPANIES FACING ACTION

Oracle is among the companies that will face the two-year non-cooperation period, according to campus sources cited in the report.

The company is reported to have not honoured around 40 offers made to students at IITs. Oracle has also not approached the IITs for recruitment so far this year, according toI IT-Guwahati Associate Professor John Jose.

The US software company has cut thousands of jobs globally this year, including in India.

Several startups are also reportedly part of the list of companies facing action.

WHAT HAPPENS TO STUDENTS WHO LOST OFFERS?

The IITs are also trying to help students affected by withdrawn offers.

Placement offices have circulated the CVs of these students among existing recruiters and asked them to consider the candidates for available positions. Jose estimated that around 20 to 30% of the affected students had found jobs through such cross-referrals.

However, IITs do not have a complete count of students who are still looking for jobs.

Some graduates may have secured employment independently through off-campus applications or personal networks without informing their institutes.

IIT PLACEMENTS FACE ANOTHER TEST

The action comes ahead of another IIT placement season, with entry-level hiring in technology continuing to face uncertainty.

Last year, individual IITs had written to around 10 to 11 companies that did not honour offers. This year, the number has risen to 22.

The AIPC's decision therefore addresses two issues at once: helping students affected by withdrawn offers and protecting the reliability of job offers made through the IIT placement system.
