National workshop on NEP 2020 redefines sports in higher education

A national workshop titled “NEP 2020 – Redefining Sports and Physical Education in Higher Education” is currently taking place at National College in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The one-day event convenes academicians, physical education experts, sports professionals and representatives from higher education institutions to explore the integration of sports within the higher education framework.

The workshop is jointly organised by National College, Tiruchirappalli, and the Tamil Nadu State Chapter of the Physical Education Foundation of India (PEFI). Sessions are being held at the Dr. V. Krishnamurthy Auditorium on the college campus.

The event was inaugurated by Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Governor of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with Rotary International Vice President 2026-27 and President of the PEFI Tamil Nadu Chapter, Rtn AKS Er Muruganandam M (MMM), attending as Guest of Honour.

Deliberations at the workshop focus on the role of sports and physical education in fostering the holistic development of students and strategies to incorporate them into higher education in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The workshop reflects NEP 2020’s emphasis on a holistic education model that extends beyond cognitive learning to include social, emotional and other skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication, perseverance and empathy. NEP 2020, announced on July 29, 2020, outlines comprehensive reforms across school and higher education sectors including technical education. It is structured around five pillars—Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability—and aims to prepare students to address national and global challenges.

Within the context of sports and physical education, the workshop examines how sporting activities can be more deeply embedded in higher education to contribute to students’ physical, mental and social development. Participants are also discussing ways to enhance sports infrastructure, training, and opportunities in educational institutions while aligning physical education with NEP 2020’s vision of holistic and multidisciplinary learning.

The workshop is expected to serve as a platform for stakeholders from education and sports sectors to exchange ideas on advancing a more integrated approach to physical education and sports within higher education.
