Dettol launches school hygiene education programme in Ladakh

Reckitt, under its flagship Dettol Banega Swasth India (BSI) campaign, launched the Dettol School Hygiene Education Programme in Ladakh on Saturday in collaboration with the Directorate of School Education, Ladakh.

The programme was formally launched at Council Model School, Ayu Saboo, Leh, in the presence of Bhanu Prabha (IAS), Administrative Secretary, School Education Department, UT Ladakh.

The initiative aims to provide structured hygiene education to schoolchildren across the Union Territory, focusing on strengthening hygiene awareness in remote and high-altitude communities.

According to Reckitt, the programme will use age-appropriate and interactive learning modules covering five key hygiene themes: personal hygiene, hygiene at school, hygiene at home, hygiene during illness, and hygiene in neighbourhoods. The initiative seeks to promote healthy practices among children and encourage behaviour change within families and communities.

Speaking at the launch, Bhanu Prabha said schools play an important role in shaping lifelong habits and children can help spread hygiene practices within their homes and communities. She said the programme combines classroom learning with practical demonstrations and interactive tools to encourage the adoption of healthy hygiene practices.

Prof Ravi Bhatnagar, Director of Corporate Communications and Corporate Affairs, South Asia, MENARP and Africa at Reckitt, said the expansion of the Dettol Banega Swasth India programme to Ladakh reflects the company's effort to extend hygiene education to underserved and geographically remote regions.

Jagran Pehel will implement the programme on the ground. It will provide students and teachers with hygiene education workbooks, teacher training manuals and curriculum-based classroom activities.

The programme will also include animated educational content, child-friendly videos developed with Sesame Workshop, digital hygiene games, an interactive hygiene chatbot, hygiene-themed comic books, awareness posters and 3D do-it-yourself hygiene and sanitation kits.

Schools participating in the programme will conduct live handwashing demonstrations to teach the correct handwashing technique and promote hand hygiene as a measure to prevent the spread of infections.

Reckitt said the Dettol Banega Swasth India campaign has reached more than 30 million children through over 900,000 schools across India over the past decade and has enabled more than 43 billion handwashing occasions through its hygiene education initiatives.
